Application Process

Current 6th Graders - All 6th grade students are enrolled in "science enrichment" classes. During the 6th grade year students must earn a minimum of 16 points based on the following scale:

  • Seminars (must earn at least 4 points)
    Each student must complete at least four seminars throughout the school year. Students that attend the summer science sessions can earn up to two seminar credits. Students can also earn one seminar credit at the Catalina Island Marine Institute.
  • Grades (must earn at least 12 points)
    a) First semester report card - science grade only (A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2)
    b) First semester work habits - science class (E/G=2, S=1)
    c) First semester citzenship - science class (E/G=2, S=1)
    d) Second report card 2nd semester (5th progress report) - science grade only (A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1)
    e) Science Fair Project (A/B=2, C=1)
  • Application (must fill out application with parent signature)

Current 7th Graders - All 7th grade students who wish to be in the magnet program during 8th grade must go through the application process. Please review the eligibility requirements and application.

Current 7th/8th Graders - Students who did not apply during their 6th grade year still has the option to apply during their 7th or 8th grade years. Application requirements are as follows(6 week process):

  • Fill out application and turn in to student's science teacher.
  • Earn at least a "B" in science ("A" preferred) during the 6 week grading period.
  • Complete 2 seminars.
  • Complete extra work in science class (i.e. magnet version of a project) if science teacher feels it is necessary.
  • Recommendation from current science teacher.

If the applicant is accepted into the magnet program their counselor will be notified, who will work with the student and his/her teachers for a schedule change.

Once a student has been accepted into the program they must keep up with the minimum eligibility requirements.
