Extracurricular
Extracurricular Opportunities
In addition to our grade level trips, unique curriculum in the classroom, and seminars we have opportunities for students get involved in various academic competitions, foreign exchange programs, and to communicate with people around the world.
Below is a general description for the various activities offered. For more detailed information please click on the corresponding link.
We are open to ideas of how to improve these activities as well new ones to add to our science magnet program. We also need volunteer help. If you are interested in getting involved with one of these teams please contact the designated coordinator.
Ham Radio
Japanese Exchange
JAMS has a bunch of "hams" or other known as ham radio operators on campus. Each week students communicate with people around the world. In addition, these students will be capable of providing information to the community in the event of a natural disaster.
Each year magnet families host students from Kizu, Japan. These students spend one week in Los Angeles absorbing as much of the U.S. culture as possible. This includes attending the summer institute with their host SMSM student.
Lego Robotics Team
QuikScience Challenge Team
The lego robotics team involves the using legos to build various vehicles and robots programmed to complete a variety of tasks. Practice putting these "robots" together and programming them is key to the success of this team during competitions.
"Quikscience is a multi-stage program whereby students actively seek to enhance their own scientific interests while improving school curriculum. The program is comprised of a number of teams, which seek excellence by competing against each other in a number of activities. " - Josh Kimball (Surfer Magazine)
